Marguerite Christina Friday Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Margie passed away peacefully February 21, 2013 at Sunnyside Kaiser Permanente at the age of 90. She was born in Nebraska to John and Hannah Thomsen. The youngest of eight children, her family packed up to move to California, but their car broke down in Portland and they liked it here so much that they never left. Margie attended Binnsmead Elementary and graduated from Franklin High School in Portland. Margie worked for a time at Meier and Frank and also attended beauty school and became a beautician. When her younger children were in grade school, she went to work as a school cook at Ventura Park Elementary School. In the early 40's, she met Robert (Bob) Friday at a dance in downtown Portland. She was smitten and put his name on dance card after dance card, dancing the entire night with Bob. In 1943, Margie traveled to San Diego to marry Bob who was stationed in the Navy and was scheduled to ship out in two weeks . Margie and Bob shared life and love for 63 years, raising four children, Sandra, Robert Jr, Dolores and Valerie. In her spare time, Margie liked to read, do stitchery, and do crossword puzzles. Margie and Bob loved animals and had several dogs and one cat over the years. A bassett hound called "Pokey" will never be forgotten, an anniversary gift from Bob. The family also enjoyed spending time at their beach cabin at the Oregon Coast. Margie could be stubborn sometimes, but was very intelligent and loved learning. She would pick up information wherever she could, she particularly like the field of medicine and could sound like a doctor describing illness and ailments. She remained sharp right up to end of her life. Margie went to live at Hazelwood Retirement several years ago and liked living there. She faced death with humor and courage and was eager to join Bob in heaven. Margie was preceded in death by her husband Robert, and seven brothers and sisters. Margie is survived by her daughter Sandra of Portland, son Rob and daughter-in-law Schelley of Tigard, daughter Dolores and son-in-law David of Covington Washington, and daughter Valerie Logan of Bocas del Toro, Panama. She also leaves four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on February 26, 2013, 10:30 a.m.
